BIO

Crab is a New York City band blending gritty post-punk energy with art-rock edge. Formed in 2023 by longtime collaborators Chris Aniftos, Captain Tunney, and Paul Aronson, their sound fuses jagged guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and raw, emotionally charged vocals—equal parts chaos and control.

Joined by Chuck Hughes on bass and David Hopp on drums, their self-titled debut (2023) and follow-up EP ApeApeApeApeApe (2025) capture the band’s mix of energy and haunting vulnerability.

Known for intense, unpredictable live shows, Crab captures the restless pulse of NYC’s underground scene with music that’s confrontational, magnetic, and deeply human.

Unlimited is the first single out of Crab’s collaboration with Stephen Kurpis of Vitruvian Sound.

This song marks a stylistic departure from our last release, moving into a more textured, lush, and eclectic sound mixing elements of post-rock, shoegaze, art-rock, and indie rock.

Recorded at Vitruvian Sound in Ridgewood NY.

“It’s lush and deep with many different pathways to chose from when it comes to listening to this nearly four-minute long song and that’s what makes it such a great journey. You can get lost in the slightly fuzzy guitar or strong and powerful drum beat that drives this song forward or, if you’re like me, you can get lost in the vocals. They are haunting but not in the typical sense of that word. They aren’t whispered or anything like that but seem to just be another layer of contrasting texture in this song that had me hooked. The first single from Crab’s collaboration with Stephen Kurpis of Viturvian Sound, “Unlimited” feels like entering a whole new world and it’s a world that, when the song was over, I wasn’t quite ready to leave so I had to listen to the track again, and again, and again, and again, and…”Girl at the Rock Shows

“Beginning with a choppy  guitar tone and riff that feels like a blend of classic alt/indie, a touch of grunge, and slacker rock, the new tune from Crab leans into this further and more keenly as the song goes on. Sounding like a fusion of late-Sonic Youth, Pavement, and My Bloody Valentine, Unlimited explodes into life by the time it gets to the chorus. Before then, however, we are treated to skittish percussion, (relatively) minimal arrangements, reverberating  guitars, and a throbbing bassline. When the aforementioned wall of sound chorus kicks in, all the previously mentioned elements are obscured in favor of a curtain of deafening noise. There are definitely pop sensibilities lying somewhere beneath the din (they come to the fore briefly around halfway through the track), but make no mistake, this is all about texture, expression, and chaos. The cacophonous shoegazey outro seems to ram this point home – in case it wasn’t already clear enough! – with all the  instruments melding into one amorphous sonic combustion before collapsing into screeching feedback. Hold on to your hats, this one is not fucking around.” — Start Track

“ Where the EP was more in tune with a math rock and experimental electronic aesthetic, Unlimited isn’t so much a reaction to that, more of a stripping down of their sound to its indie influences. That move away from electronica and esoterica towards shoegaze and indie rock doesn’t make Unlimited conventional guitar-focused music, however. It retains a math rock rhythm, with the song having a lo-fi quality that still allows the listener to pick up the various strands within the arrangement. I bet this is fun to play live – and see in a live setting too! The band has revealed that Unlimited is the first single from their relationship with Stephen Kurpis of Vitruvian Sound, and I have to say, I look forward to hearing more of it in the coming months.” Analogue Trash
