BIO
Crab is a New York City band blending gritty post-punk energy with art-rock edge. Formed in 2023 by longtime collaborators Chris Aniftos, Captain Tunney, and Paul Aronson, their sound fuses jagged guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and raw, emotionally charged vocals—equal parts chaos and control.
Joined by Chuck Hughes on bass, David Hopp on drums, and Kasey Johnson on vocals/keys their self-titled debut (2023) and follow-up EP ApeApeApeApeApe (2025) capture the band’s mix of energy and haunting vulnerability.
Known for intense, unpredictable live shows, Crab captures the restless pulse of NYC’s underground scene with music that’s confrontational, magnetic, and deeply human.
Twinkle / Shine is the second single out of Crab’s collaboration with Stephen Kurpis of Vitruvian Sound.
Twinkle aims to elaborate on our deepening sound, incorporating elements of noise alongside a driving rhythm section to capture a sense of dread and dissociation.
Shine serves as the comedown, a yin to Twinkle’s yang. Peaceful dronelike acoustic melodies and steady bongo drums serve as a contemplative hangover to Twinkle’s chaotic existential dread.
Recorded at Vitruvian Sound in Ridgewood NY.
Engineered & Mixed by Stephen Kurpis at Vitruvian Sound NYC

“ A bit like what Idles collaborating with Liars on a cover of an old Mudhoney tune might sound like, on “Twinkle”, this rocking Brooklyn quintet knows only one speed: Head down, full tilt, and entirely committed. The second single from the band’s collaboration with Stephen “Gear Daddy” Kurpis from Vitruvian Sound, here they seem to be channeling the spirit of musical provocateurs who came before them like Sonic Youth and Lightning Bolt. Twinkle is extremely noisy, massively abrasive and overflowing with attitude. There are definitely some moments of dynamic light and shade here: The song does ebb and flow, to some extent, and there are different tonal textures at play. But we’d wager that what you ultimately take away from it will mostly be the moments where everything is in the red, for there is simply no ignoring them. An agitated, frantic, cacophonous noise, this is like a shot in the arm or a punch in the face. “Twinkle” is an audible odyssey in just under three minutes, and is a track that will not be easily forgotten.” — Start Track
“Crab’s Twinkle is a jagged, immersive collision of noise rock abrasion and post punk tension. Built on dissonant guitars and a restless rhythmic pulse, the track leans hard into unease, crafting a sonic landscape that feels both claustrophobic and hypnotic. There’s a raw physicality to its distortion, but beneath the chaos lies a deliberate sense of control. Vocals drift through the mix like fragmented thoughts, reinforcing themes of dread and dissociation. It’s not an easy listen—and that’s the point. Twinkle thrives in discomfort, turning noise into something strangely compelling and emotionally resonant.” -Last Day Deaf
